Our beginnings shape how we drink

My first memories of drinking

It’s funny how all of a sudden, you’re an adult. 😅

I mean I can remember distinctly when I was a kid how I always used to say, “Oh, I can’t wait till I’m grown up and I can do what grownups do…like drink”.

Ok - maybe the “drink” part wasn’t apart of my original thoughts, but bare with me here 😂

I’m 27 now and I know a WHOLE lot about drinking, alcohol, its history, and so on than probably all of my Caribbean family combined (on both sides). But before any of that, I was just a kid watching the grownups in my family form their relationships with alcohol.

My mom would come home from her long day as a social worker and pour herself a glass of red wine. This soon became her ritual and moment of peace, in that one glass.

The rest of my Caribbean family? Rum had a permanent residency. And when they wanted a little switch up, there was always wine coolers or RTDs aplenty.

Now mind you - I’m a kid witnessing all the grownups in my life imbibe on the good stuff. While, I didn’t know what they were drinking on - I knew it looked exclusive, like something you’d eventually get to understand. Funny how those little moments stick with you. 😊

So, to not make this post a whole essay into my childhood, lemme get to the point.

In more ways than we realize - our first perceptions and experiences with drinking can shape how we view it today.

I know you wasn’t expecting to get all reflective on a Monday did you? 😉

Well friends, these are the kinds of conversations I wanna start having with you!

Especially as a sober-curious girlie I’m in the phase where I can use my adult free will to intentionally craft how I want to create experiences for myself with alcohol. And I invite you to do the same ♥️

What are some rituals/experiences you’re crafting in your own drinking journey right now? Sound off 🔈️🔈️
